Oil warning light: Means and How to fix?

The lights indicate

If the orange oil light is on, it means that the engine oil level is too low. If your destination is nearby, you can continue your journey and then add oil at home.

If the red oil warning light is on, it means that the engine is not sufficiently lubricated (for example due to a very low oil level). You must stop the vehicle immediately and turn off the engine to prevent permanent engine damage.

Check the oil level

Park the car on a level surface and it is best to check the oil level with a dipstick when the engine is warm. Your car manual will tell you where to find the dipstick, but on most vehicles it is easy to find by the colored handle.

Make sure that the level is between the minimum and maximum marks on the dipstick. If the level is below the maximum mark, top up with the correct grade of oil (performance and viscosity specifications).

If the oil level is below the minimum mark, find out how many kilometers you have traveled since the last oil change. If you are unsure or unaware, a complete oil change is recommended. If the distance traveled is between 4,000 km and 15,000 km, you only need to top up the oil. If it is greater than 15,000 km, you need to change the oil.

If you have covered less than 4,000 km and the oil level is low, this may indicate a technical problem. Top up and start measuring every week or consult your local service center.

Check the appearance and color of the oil

If the oil is black, it's time to change it - ask the workshop to use the oil you bring yourself - you will save! A dark brown but still transparent oil is close to the need for replacement, while a light brown color is normal. If there are white spots in the oil, it means that coolant is entering the engine oil due to an internal problem in the engine. Have your car inspected.
